Abstract:

Smart pumps are intravenous (IV) medication pumps with built-in software that checks programmed drug doses against specific, preset limits. IV medication errors are a common error identified in health care organizations that can lead to considerable harm. Organizations are increasingly implementing smart pumps to help avert potentially these deadly IV medication errors. This article discusses the limitations of the technology, errors associated with the technology and offers tips and strategies for smart pump implementation and use, in terms of preventing errors and improving patient safety.
