Publisher: Joint Commission Resources
Abstract:
For many years, Joint Commission standards have supported the provision of care, treatment, and services in a manner that is sensitive and responsive to individual patient needs. Now, new standards related to patient-centered communication and cultural competence are in the process of development and piloting. This article describes what Broward Health, just north of Miami, is already doing to ensure effective communication with patients with limited English proficiency (LEP)—and how they did it under the adverse conditions surrounding the recent Haiti earthquake, which sent surges of refugee LEP patients to Broward's sites.Document Type: Research article
