Abstract:

As part of the continuous effort to stay abreast of Emergency Management (EM) preparedness, The Joint Commission has engaged EM experts, served on national EM panels, and reviewed the current literature on EM. Based on these efforts, the Joint Commission has concluded that it is not sufficient to require health care organizations to plan for a single emergency event; rather, organizations should be able to respond effectively to combinations of escalating events. In parallel with these conclusions, the Joint Commission has revised the EM standards, effective January 1, 2008. This article discusses the goals of the revised standards, the extent of the revisions, how to address emergency planning issues, as well as how to address the six critical areas for EM.
