Abstract:

This year, OSHA will release guidelines for health care organizations on protecting staff members and patients against pandemic influenza. An influenza pandemic is one of the most significant health risks to patients and staff, with the potential to affect 15% to 35% of the U.S. population. This article describes these OSHA recommendations and how a pandemic outbreak could affect hospitals. Also included are infection control recommendations, OSHA standards of special importance, and background information in influenza.
