Abstract:

The author comments on Freeman's concept of the narrative unconscious, especially its emphasis on culturally shared unconscious memories. Several questions are posed, including: (1) Can memory be “collective?“; (2) What are cultural givens and how do people collectively experience them?; and (3) Are cultural “memories“ only located at the level of nation states? Each of these questions is briefly discussed.
