Improving seedling growth of unaged and aged aubergine seeds with smoke-derived butenolide

Abstract:
The effects of different priming treatments (hydropriming, PEG 6000, PEG+butenolide or butenolide alone) on the germination and seedling emergence of unaged and aged aubergine seeds were tested. In unaged seeds, priming treatments did not improve seed performance. However, priming with the smoke-derived butenolide (3-methyl-2H-furo[2,3-c]pyran-2-one) alone or in combination with PEG enhanced seedling size (fresh and dry weight), and allowed more rapid emergence (lower mean emergence time) and increased uniformity (lower CV) of aged aubergine seeds. These findings suggest that butenolide inclusion in priming may trigger the repair of deteriorated seeds and may therefore have a role in the production of vigorous transplants, particularly when carry over seeds are used.Document Type: Research article
