Abstract:
With the objective of identifying the storage behaviour of Baillonella toxisperma, Pycnanthus angolensis and Pterocarpus soyauxii seeds, lots of fruits were collected in the Mayombe rainforest (Congo). Seeds germinated to 100%, immediately after harvest, when they have moisture content ranging from 48.8% to 90.6%, on a fresh weight basis. However, the viability decreased very quickly after harvesting, with decreasing MC, as these seeds are desiccation-sensitive. Their storage at low temperature (between 5°C and 10°C) conducted to total loss of viability. Seeds stored with reduced 10% MC from initial MCs at temperature of 16°C conserved the viability for a relatively short time. Among the three species studied these results showed that Baillonella toxisperma and Pycnanthus angolensis seeds exhibited recalcitrant storage behaviour. However, they suggested that Pterocarpus soyauxii should be classified as intermediate on the basis of its capacity to withstand desiccation to 9-10% moisture content. Stored tests show that the maintenance of viability of these seeds with conventional storage techniques is problematic.Document Type: Research article
