Abstract:
Seed germination rate depends to a large measure on the rate of water absorption. The dynamics of water absorption is in its turn affected by diverse biotic and abiotic factors. Five sunflower lines (Helianthus annuus L.) were tested: ocms-74, cms-v-8931-3-4, ocms-22, ocms-98 and cms-ol-3, before and after natural aging for up to 12 months. The amount of water absorbed by sunflower seed in a 24 hour period decreased with age. The rate of decrease was higher both in seed stored in ambient conditions than in those stored at 4°C and 80-85% relative humidity and during imbibition at reduced water potentials achieved using solutions of polyethylene glycol.Document Type: Research article
