A general description of spontaneous magnetization in multi-junction π-rings is given by considering the free energy of the system. The magnetization flux of π-rings in the ground states as a function of screen parameter β is discussed. Based on the description, a model with an infinitely large one-dimensional π-ring array in the absence of external magnetic field is analysed. The result shows that the ground state corresponds to the full antiparallel pattern of magnetization flux generated in the π-rings, which is in agreement with the experimental results obtained by Hilgenkamp et al (2003 Nature 422 50) in large-scale YBCO corner junction arrays.
