The ac loss plays an important role in the design of electro-technical components based on high-temperature superconductors. It is important to have reliable techniques for the measurements of the ac loss under application-like conditions. This paper contains a comparison between the ac loss results obtained with a calorimetric measurement method and those obtained with an electromagnetic measurement method. The measurements were performed on a Bi-2223 silver-sheathed non-twisted multi-filamentary tape. The sample was exposed to combinations of an ac transport current and an ac applied magnetic field (oriented perpendicular or parallel to the tape surface). The results obtained with the two measuring methods show good agreement with each other.
