We review soft and hard fragmentation of heavy quarks into heavy mesons with special emphasis on the Peterson model and those currently obtained from leading-order perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculations. We reduce the hard fragmentation functions to the Peterson form, maintaining a strong interaction coupling constant and meson decay constant/wavefunction at the origin of the non-relativistic meson bound state. This form is assumed to be useful when a light degree of freedom is involved in heavy meson and baryon fragmentation. We investigate heavy baryon production in various cases when one, two and three heavy quarks are involved in the formation of such states. We demonstrate the behaviour of fragmentation functions as well as their total fragmentation probabilities.
