Abstract:
We show that a Robinson-Trautman radiating metric has zero Bondi news if and only if it is a Kinnersley metric for a point mass accelerating arbitrarily with the emission of matter of zero rest mass. This corrects a statement, which we made in a recent paper ( [A article="0264-9381/16/2/022"] 1999 Class.?Quantum Grav.?16 611-7 [/A] ), that the news function vanishes only for those Kinnersley metrics that have axial symmetry. It follows that none of the `photon rockets' of the Kinnersley family generate gravitational waves.
