This article provides a summary of major issues that confronted the recipients of an AHRC grant whose aim was to compile a documented history of British South Asian theatre, explaining on the way the decision to publish the outcome of research in two distinct volumes, one primarily historical and the other composed of critical essays.Keywords: diaspora; documentation; archive/archives; history/histories; funding
