Abstract:

This essay is concerned, primarily from a director's viewpoint, with the way in which theatre productions of Strindberg's Miss Julie have been staged and received in Britain. The productions cited and discussed have been selected with a view to establishing what might be called a stylistic spectrum. This assists in the highlighting of the various modes and points of intervention and interpretation that have characterized the work of the practitioners under review. [Note: this is the first part of the article, which is published in two parts, the second to be published later in STP.]
