Abstract:

Bakur Bakuradze's short film Moscow (Moskva, 2007), which was made jointly with Dmitrii Mamuliia, screened at Kinotavr Shorts in 2007 and won the Jury's Diploma in the Shorts Competition. This film attracted the attention of many critics to the name of Bakur Bakuradze. The short film, set in Moscow, explores the life of migrant workers and ends with a frame that is almost static: it exposes the threat of indifference and aggression as two skinheads threaten a migrant worker on a bus through their sheer presence, while at the same time a young, female fellow passenger ashamedly and slowly turns her head away from the scene. Bakuradze's debut feature film Shultes participated in the Quinzaine des Ralisateurs at Cannes in 2008 and subsequently won the main award at Kinotavr 2008. It participated at numerous international festivals, including Stockholm, London, Munich, Montreal and Thessaloniki. With his next project, Hunter, Bakuradze has been invited to the prestigious pre-production market Cine Mart in Rotterdam in January 2009. Hopefully this script will make interesting reading of a new voice in contemporary Russian film.
