Indices for resilience and global viability

Interconnectivity is the almost invisible linkage that holds the more familiar aspects of our world together. There are many measures that reflect the state of a multitude of specific variables but too often the connections are not made until some disaster or downward spiral occurs. Then, in hindsight, it is possible to see the warning signs and the accumulating circumstances that are later referred to as the causes, or even 'the cause'.

In this article I put forth the case for greater attention to integrating the knowledge that we have, filling the obvious gaps and making the public policy case for listening to the signals, weak and strong, that indicate that something is changing for good or ill, that something is remaining constant that should be changing, or that some variable we wish to remain constant is under threat.
