Abstract:This article is an account of a film investigation into the life and work of the littleknown documentary film director Ruby Grierson. The article takes account of the differing research techniques required for written work and screenwork and explores tensions between approaches to research, practice and theoretical methodologies when producing within broadcast constraints. It compares these with opportunities available in more open-ended research-based contexts.
