Armada? What Armada? Spanish reaction to the 1916 Easter Uprising and the path to Irish independence
By Alvaro JaspeThe aim of this article will be to examine the various responses and reactions in Spanish official circles and in the mainly Castilian conservative and liberal press to the revolutionary events which unfurled in Ireland from 1916 to 1922, within the context of Spanish foreign and domestic policy during this period. As well as assessing the official governmental response, the paper will analyse the currents of opinion prevailing within Spanish/Castilian society and gauge how events between their old historical ally and Britain were viewed in the reality of early twentieth-century foreign policy.

Transitions That Count: Josefina Molina
More LessThis article deals with an aspect of the neglect that the work experiences of and films made by women have been subject to in Spanish historiography on cinema. It focuses on Josefina Molina's neglect despite the fact that one of her works could be considered a key text of the Transition. This analysis provides a partial critique of canon-making, an exercise that should be questioned and never taken for granted.

The Catalan language and immigrants from outside the European Union
By Sarah GoreCatalan nationalism often takes the Catalan language as its core symbol: Catalan is Catalonia's fet diferencial (differentiating trait) which sets it apart from the rest of Spain. Catalan nationalists interpret the language as a key manifestation of the civic nature of Catalan nationalism. Therefore, willingness to learn Catalan is seen by Catalans as the ultimate test for the desire of immigrants to integrate. There is extensive research regarding the relationship between Catalan and the historic immigration from other areas of Spain. However, little research has been done regarding Catalan and the more recent immigration from outside the European Union. The paper is based on research with non-European Union immigrants in Barcelona and explores their attitudes towards Catalan and the role that it played regarding their adaptation to Catalonia. In spite of the efforts made by the Generalitat, Catalan continues to be a means of excluding non-EU immigrants from core aspects of life in Catalonia.

Defending Basque Taxation Devolution in the European Union: The Price of European Integration
More LessThis article examines the impact of European integration on Basque politics by analysing the causes, development and implications of a dispute between European Union (EU) and Basque authorities over the permissible scope of Basque taxation prerogatives. It examines three dimensions of the EU's impact on Basque politics: the impact of European integration on Basque legal-constitutional powers; its impact on new opportunities for Basque authorities to form influential strategic alliances with EU authorities; and the effect of the EU on territorial relations within Spain. It concludes by arguing that, in this episode, European integration has not been kind to the Basque Country. The EU's market competition imperative provided a justification for the emasculation of historically and politically significant Basque taxation competencies and there were more obstacles than opportunities for forming influential strategic alliances with EU authorities. Indeed, the main lesson drawn from the case is that despite significant political tensions there are much stronger foundations for strategic cooperation between Basque and Spanish authorities.
