Abstract:
The development of community music as a structured activity and academic discipline occurred in a variety of social and institutional contexts during the last fifty years. The International Society for Music Education, through its Commission on Community Music Activity (CMA), represents one forum in which community musicians and those interested in such activity maintained a dialogue and exchanged ideas and practices. This article documents the history of the Commission and evaluates its contribution to the emerging field of community music. Keywords: Community Music; The International Society for Music Education; ISME; Commission for Community Music Activity
