Photo essays and photographs in visual arts-based educational research
Authors: Ricardo Marn and Joaqun RoldnPhotographs are often used in educational research, particularly studies using visual arts research methodologies. The visual and conceptual relationships established between the pictures themselves in a research report are decisive for scientific and artistic quality. We recommend the use of concepts such as photo series, photo essay, photographic discourse, photo abstract, photo conclusion and photographic quotation. Each concept fulfils a different function and value as a specific research criterion. The article offers definitions of some of these concepts and shows photographic portraits made by students in the primary teacher education department at the University of Granada, drawing on the work of Lewis Hine.

Art education in Canada: reflections from scholars impacting the field
By Joanna ReesThis study discerned trends in contemporary Canadian art educational research through interviews with key scholars at leading Canadian universities. The art educators interviewed included Fiona Blaikie, Roger Clark, Kit Grauer, Rita Irwin, Jan Jagodzinski, Anna Kindler, Cathy Mullen, Harold Pearse and David Pariser. Canadian art education is noteworthy for alternative research practices that include arts-based research, arts-informed research and a/r/tography. In the interviews, Canadian scholars discussed their contributions towards the field and its evolution from the trajectories of social theory to descriptive research. In addition, they brought to light current debates about the validity of arts-based research and visual culture studies.

Lunar New Year in Taiwan
More LessBecause research into elementary schooling has shown that Taiwanese students do not have much insight into their surroundings and their knowledge of Taiwanese traditions is limited, I designed a curriculum about the Lunar New Year Festival. The curriculum focused especially on oral expression and art making. This article describes the journey of making some Lunar New Year posters. The curriculum was implemented with 35 fourth grade students in an elementary school in Tainan over a period of four weeks from December to January 2007, right before the Lunar New Year season. I adopted the role of a teacher-researcher. Through implementing this curriculum, I gained new insights into peer collaboration and ways of expanding students' cultural understanding, observation, critical-thinking and problem solving skills. Hopefully these students are more aware of their surroundings now, understand their cultural traditions better and can apply what they learned to their daily lives.

Gender-orientated media usage?
More LessThis article considers the question: Is media usage and/or ownership by Austrian school children influenced by gender? The statistics it reports clearly demonstrate that media usage and possession is gender specific. The article also highlights which kinds of media are gendered. The findings come from a survey questionnaire completed by approximately 1500 pupils attending secondary schools within Upper Austria.

Veterans and an arts and crafts programme: a community of understanding and hope
By Cindy HasioThis article reflects on the experiences of a veteran community inside an arts and crafts room at a veterans hospital in Dallas, Texas. Arts and crafts play an important role in helping individuals to develop psychomotor, artistic and social skills. Whereas the majority of the veterans did not have any previous training in or experience of making art, they could follow basic instructions for making crafts. Craft making provided them with new opportunities for self-expression. I observed them start as learners and acquire the knowledge and productive skills to make arts and crafts. Then I watched them help other newcomers to the arts and craft room by teaching them the techniques. I understand this as a sociocultural practice that is very valuable for veteran communities.

Public art as an educational resource
By Ricardo ReisThis article presents the results of a trans-disciplinary study focusing on public art and art education. It poses questions about public art as an educational resource, and acknowledges the need to clarify its educational role. The study investigated whether or not urban environments with numerous works of public art contribute positively to the development of visual literacy. A survey was conducted of fifth and sixth grade students in three schools located in urban spaces with a lot of public art and three schools in places with very little. A finding was that students who attended schools in environments with many public works were more skilled in the perception of urban space and more visually literate. This was due not only to their daily contact with them, but also to socio-cultural factors. Based on the results, the author produced an educational resource for teachers and parents interested in developing children's visual literacy.

Introducing visual culture education into Greek primary schools: a curriculum intervention
More LessThis article reports on a case study research in Greece carried out in two primary-school classrooms with children aged between 10 and 12. The research aims were informed by a review of literature about visual culture education and recent developments in Greek art education. This article describes the Greek educational context and a curriculum intervention. It presents the findings from the intervention and concludes that visual culture is a valuable and necessary part of art education that should be introduced into the national curriculum for primary-school art in Greece.
