Abstract:

Since the 1980s, and especially since his death in 1992, Satyajit Ray, the famous Indian film- maker, has been the subject of a flurry of studies, both in Bengali and in English, written mostly by Indian critics and scholars as well as by those of the Indian diaspora. In this growing corpus, the appearance of Suranjan Ganguly's succinct and searching study under review is a welcome addition. The author, a native of Ray's native Calcutta and academically trained in film studies, had, in fact, interviewed Ray sometime in 1987. As he admits in the Preface, this encounter with Satyajit inspired him to study Rays oeuvre for bringing out a critical appraisal of the master.
