Abstract:The author analyses official indicators of growth and productivity in the USA in the post‐war period, and concludes that they may be subject to systematic biases which lead to underestimation of productivity performance in some sectors. He identifies three possible sources of mis‐measurement of industry output and productivity, and estimates their possible effects in various sectors of the US economy.
