Abstract:During the past decade a great deal of effort has been focused on the advantages computerization can bring to engineering design and production activities. This can be seen in such developments as MRP, CAD, CAM and FMS. It is recognized, however, that greater advantages could be gained if functions like these could be merged together into a single integrated operating system termed Computer‐Integrated Manufacturing (CIM). In this paper, we will take a look at CIM in the USA and review trends towards the total integration of computerized manufacturing aids.
