Abstract:

At first, my family was Tommy and Mai. My oldest brother, Jonny, had been sent to live with my grandmother in rural Germany. I don't remember Heinz being around. Not that he wasn't; all I remember is that, when he WAS around, it was a really big deal. When we immigrated to the United States and arrived at the dock in New York, peering down into the crowd from the ship, Mai, Jonny, and Tom could pick him out, I couldn't.
