Abstract:

New emission legislation are major drivers for marine engine performance development. In the past, focus was on improving engine efficiency but as more stringent legislation came into force, the focus shifted towards reduced emissions, particularly nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulphur oxides (SOx).

This paper presents different technologies and solutions planned for fulfilling future emission standards on Wärtsilä marine engines, including engine internal technologies, after-treatment solutions, and fuel quality options. A rough comparison of different technologies' life-cycle costs as well as the roadmap for future emission technology development are presented. Furthermore, the Hercules Beta program funded by the European Commission within Framework program 7, and its importance in the development process, is explored.
