Abstract:

ITS, rpl16 and trnG sequences, together with morphological data, were used to circumscribe the European problematic taxa within the Sciuro-hypnum reflexum complex. Strongly supported monophyletic clades sustain several of the target taxa as distinct species (S. reflexum, S. starkii, S. tromsoeense, S. glaciale, S. dovrense, S. latifolium). The segregation of S. nelsonii and Brachythecium glaciale var. gelidum is found to be inconsistent with our results and the two taxa are therefore synonymized.
