Abstract:

In recent publications both Pulsatilla alba Rchb. and Pulsatilla alpina subsp. alba Zāmelis & Paegle are treated as homotypic synonyms of P. alpina (L.) Delarbre subsp. alpina. Whereas this is correct for the former, it is not true for the latter. Pulsatilla alpina subsp. alba Zāmelis & Paegle (1927) is legitimate and the correct name for Pulsatilla scherfelii (Ullep.) Skalický (P. alba auct.) at subspecific level whether or not it is regarded as distinct from P. alpina subsp. austriaca Aichele & Schwegler (1957).
