Improved Identification of Modal Parameters of Akashi Kaikyo Bridge

Abstract:Modal parameters of the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge were identified from ambient vibration and wind-induced response data. An ERA method together with band-pass filtering and the optimum order of the realized system was used. Modal damping at different wind speeds (0 − 30m/s) was identified and significant improvement of identification in modal damping was realized. It was also found that modal damping values are comparable to those in the design specification, however some of those identified are slightly less than that in the design specification. It is expected that future monitoring and further study of the modal parameters would benefit maintenance of the bridge.
