Poland is a democracy situated in the centre of Europe, between the Baltic Sea and the Carpathian Mountains. With a size of 312,679 km2 it is one of the largest countries in the European Union (EU). The population is 38.1 million and the society is homogenous, without any significant ethnic or religious minorities. Roman Catholicism remains the central religion, influencing public debate.
