In Bulgaria, there is a widely shared belief in the importance of serving society and the community. This has led to both individuals and business embracing charity and philanthropy. Social responsibility is not, however, generally part of the strategic direction of a business.

Donating to ‘serve the Bulgarian nation’ is a longstanding Bulgarian tradition with deep roots in the nation's history. The country was under violent Ottoman rule for approximately five centuries until 1878. During this time, the Ottomans tried to suppress and assimilate the Bulgarian nation, which Bulgarians met with systematic and prolonged resistance, maintaining and cultivating a national self-consciousness. As part of this effort, Bulgarians built and protected schools and churches, where they could teach reading and writing and produce hand-written books about Bulgarian history. As a consequence, there exists a strong and dedicated passion to serving the Bulgarian community and cultivating the spirit of Bulgarian society.
