Abstract:

Globalisation is well and truly at work. In today's global capitalist system, advanced technology and ever-faster communications networks are enabling companies to smash traditional time and space constraints in order to drive costs down. For those companies that are quick to seize opportunities in the current stampede towards lower-wage economies, the rewards are potentially huge. In the meantime, however, the traditional foundations on which economies are built are shifting like quicksand and some fear a zero-sum game whereby wins in some economies will imply direct and perhaps long-term losses for others. That this trend is set to bring about massive change is beyond doubt. The remaining question is whether, in the obsessive battle for greater competitiveness, new opportunities can be generated in the vacuum left behind.
