Abstract:

Vision loss due to age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a major public health issue that significantly impacts the quality of life of affected individuals and their families. Recently approved anti-VEGF agents have shown promise as treatment options for the neovascular form of AMD. At present, ranibizumab is the most promising US FDA-approved treatment for neovascular AMD, with noteworthy effects on vision improvement and stabilization. The safety and efficacy of ranibizumab for the treatment of neovascular AMD were established in several pivotal clinical trials, including the Minimally Classic/Occult Trial of the Anti-VEGF Antibody Ranibizumab in the Treatment of Neovascular Age-Related Macular Degeneration (MARINA), and Anti-VEGF Antibody for the Treatment of Predominantly Classic Choroidal Neovascularization in Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ANCHOR) trials. Ranibizumab is being further investigated as a potential therapy for other indications, including diabetic macular edema, retinal vein occlusion and presumed ocular histoplasmosis syndrome.
