Abstract:

Sleep-related problems are frequent complaints of patients with Parkinson's disease. Although initially recognized by James Parkinson in his famous monograph `An essay on the shaking palsy' in 1817, disturbed nocturnal sleep and daytime sleepiness have only recently received appropriate medical attention. The aim of this review is to provide an overview of the most common disturbances of nocturnal sleep and daytime alertness in patients with Parkinson's disease, with special emphasis on diagnosis and therapeutic strategies.

Keywords: daytime somnolence; Parkinson's disease; periodic limb movement disorder; rapid eye movement behavior disorder; restless legs syndrome; sleep; sleep apnea
