Abstract:

Sense of community (SC) is a theoretically and socially relevant topic that has only recently been empirically researched. After reviewing the relevant theoretical and empirical literature, this study explores cross-cultural viability of measures and research mainly conducted in the United States and English speaking countries by building and testing a measure of SC in an urban, highly communitarian Spanish neighborhood, La Barceloneta. A 18-item self-report scale was developed and applied to a sample. Statistical analysis showed the scale to be reliable and multidimensional although dominated by a main relational factor (Neighborhood Interaction) with two other, minor although conceptually meaningful ones: Territorial Rooting or belonging and Interdependence. Results, whose theoretical and practical implications are discussed, supported most of Sarason's theory of SC and of past empirical and theoretical analyses.
