Abstract:

The paper presents the results of a study designed to identify and characterise reading and writing tasks set by teachers and carried out by students in order to learn certain contents. An "ex post facto" quasi experimental design with three independent variables was used: role (teacher, student), educational level (first and second stage of ESO [compulsory secondary education], Bachillerato [post-compulsory secondary education], and University), and knowledge domain (social vs. natural sciences). The dependent variables were tasks frequency and tasks characteristics. The responses given by 214 teachers and 646 students to various questionnaires were subjected to statistical significance tests. The results show that few of the tasks promote constructive learning and thus suggest a rather traditional view of what students and teachers say happens in classrooms and lecture theatres.
