Abstract:

En el presente artículo se examina el nivel de comprensión y de recuerdo que presentan, así como las estrategias cognitivas que utilizan estudiantes bilingües de diferentes niveles académicos (universitarios vs. de enseñanzas medias), en el estudio de dos versiones lingüísticas (euskera-castellano) de un texto científico. Los resultados mostraron que a medida que aumentaba el nivel académico de los estudiantes, se producía una mejora en la comprensión del texto en castellano, pero no en euskera. Además, el nivel académico no ejerció influencia sobre el recuerdo de información esencial del texto. Respecto a las estrategias, los universitarios emplearon mayor cantidad de estrategias de esencialización que los estudiantes de enseñanzas medias, en ambas versiones lingüísticas del texto. Por último, exceptuando la mayor comprensión alcanzada por los universitarios con el texto en castellano que con el texto en euskera, no se observaron diferencias ni en la comprensión, ni en el recuerdo, ni en la cantidad y tipos de estrategias cognitivas empleadas por los sujetos en ambas lenguas. Se discuten las implicaciones que tienen tales resultados en el ámbito educativo.

This paper examines the level of comprehension and recall shown by bilingual students of different academic levels (college vs. high school students), as well as the cognitive strategies they use, when studying two linguistic versions (Euskera-Castilian) of a scientific text. The results showed that as the students' academic level increased, so did their comprehension of the text in Castilian, but not in Euskera. Moreover, their academic level did not influence the recall of essential information in the text. With regard to strategies, the college students used a larger number of essentialization strategies than the high school students, in both linguistic versions of the text. Finally, with the exception of the college students' better comprehension level of the Castilian text compared with the text in Euskera, no differences in comprehension, in recall or in the number and types of cognitive strategies used by the subjects in either language were observed. The implications these data may have for education are discussed.
