Abstract:

The study sought to evaluate the impact of an artistic programme on musical aesthetic judgment and on different musical abilities, such as hearing discrimination and rhythmic reproduction with children from 6 to 7 years. For this purpose a pretest-intervention-posttest design was used. The study sample was 135 first year primary school students; of these, 89 were assigned to the experimental group and 46 to the control group. The intervention consisted on twenty-one 90 minutes sessions focusing on three artistic languages: visual, musical, and dramatic. Prior to and after the intervention, the dependent variables were measured with two tests: Musical Tests for Children (Zenatti, 1980), and Reproduction of Rhythmic Structures (Stambak, 1958). MANCOVA results showed posttest-pretest differences, suggesting that the programme improved significant melodic aesthetic judgment and discrimination of melodic changes.
