Abstract:

The paper deals with the production of musical meaning by performers and listeners in order to understand how musical communication takes place between them. It includes an approach both practical and theoretical: a pedagogical experiment on teaching students music interpretation is reported, and an inquiry crossing the work of Lakoff and Johnson with the contributions of Donald and Trevarthen is developed, establishing an alternative account of meaning, which is summarised in five principles. The results show that during the ritual of a musical performance, performer and listener somehow capture the same level of meaning production, which is operating below their conscious awareness and revealing the embodied structure of experience. At this level, what is shared is not so much the same meaning but rather the same process of producing musical meanings that may only be expressed in terms of a quasi-corporeal experience.

Este artículo se ocupa de la producción del significado del intérprete y del oyente a fin de entender cómo toma lugar entre ellos la comunicación musical. El trabajo incluye una aproximación teórica y otra empírica. En la primera, se reseña un experimento pedagógico sobre la enseñanza de la interpretación musical. En la segunda, se plantea un examen que cruza la obra de Lakoff y Johnson con las contribuciones de Donald y de Trevarthen, dando lugar a una explicación alternativa del significado que se sintetiza en cinco principios. Los resultados muestran que durante el ritual de la interpretación musical, el intérprete y el oyente, de alguna manera, capturan el mismo nivel de producción de significado que funciona por debajo de la conciencia y revela la estructura corporal de la experiencia. Lo que se comparte no es tanto el mismo significado sino el mismo proceso de producción de significados musicales, que son sólo expresables en términos de una experiencia casi corporal.

The journal aims to promote research in the frontier of psychological knowledge: innovative researchers are especially welcome in this publication. Estudios de Psicolog�a also fosters approaches that delve deep into psychology's most relevant trends and developments. Thus, at least one of its three yearly issues will be devoted to monographic themes.
Accepted manuscripts include original works, both of theoretical and empirical nature, which mean an advance or innovation in any field in psychology or related sciences. It is most important that these works highlight the relationship between the theoretical relevance of the data or reflections presented and the state of the art, both in the specific field addressed and in psychology at large.
