Abstract:

The study sought to determine the relevance of the meaning attributed to different environmental sounds (natural, social and human, technological and sound signals) in a sound assessment situation. The subjective assessment was designed in terms of the sounds' pleasantness-unpleasantness. To investigate the meaning given to these sounds, the subjects were asked to describe their feelings and sensations associated with listening to these sounds. The method of presenting stimuli -direct listening and written description- was analysed for its possible influence on the evaluation. The study was carried out on a sample of 279 subjects with a wide age-range. The results of the study offer significant differences in subjects' assessment of the sounds analysed. Natural sounds were the most valued, and were associated with pleasurable feelings and well-being. In contrast with technological sounds that were the least valued and were associated with subjects' annoyance and stress. In addition, it was shown that the method of stimuli presentation significantly influences its assessment.
