Abstract:

Una implicación del modelo desarrollado por C. W. Eriksen y su grupo para explicar el efecto de compatibilidad de los flancos (ECF) es que al manipular el grado de similitud de los flancos neutrales con los estímulos objetivo se deben observar cambios en el tamaño del efecto. Para ponerlo a prueba hemos realizado un experimento para el que, con el criterio independiente de trabajos que han generado matrices de confusión entre letras, hemos seleccionado dos flancos con diferente grado de similitud con uno de los estímulos objetivo. Los resultados muestran que el grado de influencia es sensible a esta manipulación, tanto en la facilitación como en la interferencia. Además de exponer posibles interpretaciones alternativas de la condición 'neutral', se discuten también las posibles implicaciones de los resultados en la elección de los estímulos para esa condición. Se propone denominar a esa condición como de 'flancos no-definidos'.

A consequence from the model developed by C. W. Eriksen and his colleagues to account for the Flanks Compatibility Effect (FCE) is that when the degree of similarity between the neutral flanks and the target is manipulated, changes in the size of the effect should be observed. In order to test this prediction an experiment is done. Two flanks with different levels of similarity with one of the targets are selected, following as an independent criterion the results from studies generating a confusion matrix between letters. The results show that the amount of effect is sensitive to this manipulation, in terms of both facilitation and interference. Besides the discussion of alternative conceptions of the 'neutral' condition, the implications of the present results are also discussed in the selection of the stimuli for that condition. The designation of that condition as 'non-defined flanks' is proposed.

Its aim is to promote theoretical debate and relevant research work. The journal aims to promote research in the frontier of psychological knowledge: innovative researchers are especially welcome in this publication. Estudios de Psicolog�a also fosters approaches that delve deep into psychology's most relevant trends and developments. Thus, at least one of its three yearly issues will be devoted to monographic themes.
Accepted manuscripts include original works, both of theoretical and empirical nature, which mean an advance or innovation in any field in psychology or related sciences. It is most important that these works highlight the relationship between the theoretical relevance of the data or reflections presented and the state of the art, both in the specific field addressed and in psychology at large.
