Abstract:Topical treatment of bollwonn,Helicoverpa zea (Boddie), 3rd instars with amitraz 30 min before topical application of cis- or trans-permethrin14C resulted in a decreased rate of pyrethroid metabolism when compared with larvae treated with the respective pyrethroid alone. Levels of cis-permethrin in the container rinse, insect rinse, and internal fraction combined at 24 h were 79.8 and 65.5% of the recovered radiocarbon in the presence and absence of amitraz, respectively, and those of trans-permethrin were 57.8 and 28.5%, respectively. Amitnlz and certain of its metabolites (N'-2,4-dimethylphenyl-N-methylformamidine, 2,4-dimethylformanilide,and 2,4-dimethylaniline) inhibited the degradation of trans-permethrin by homogenates of 5th instars. Perturbation of permethrin pharmacokinetics by amitraz or some of its metabolites, or both, could have contributed to the synergy observed with this formamidine.
