Abstract:A cluster count method for estimating honey bee, Apis mellifera L., colony strength is presented in contrast to intensive frame-by-frame evaluations. Correlation coefficients between the two methods were highly significant for 5 yr. Cluster counts are recommended to growers and beekeepers involved in pollination contracts as a simple, rapid, economic evaluation method which is not excessively disruptive to the colony. The observed adult honey bee colony populations can be estimated accurately by using the derived regression equation. The relation of cluster and intensive count to the brood area is discussed.
