Peak catches of male Harrisina brillians Barnes & McDunnough in traps baited with the sex pheromone S-( +)-2-butyl-(Z)-7-tetradecenoate were first obtained at a dosage of 100 µg per septum (estimated release rate of 8.6 ng/h). At higher dosages, trap catches were not significantly greater. Addition of the R-( -) enantiomer to 500 µg s-( +)- 2-butyl-(Z)-7-tetradecenoate per septum had no effect at 3 or 9% but significantly reduced trap catches at 23 and 50%. In a comparison of the 500-µg dosage of the S-( +) enantiomer and unmated female H. brillians moths in traps, female-baited traps attracted 2.5 times as many males as did pheromone-baited traps. It is suggested that additional pheromone components are produced by calling female H. brillians.
