Exposure of male German cockroaches, Blattella germanica (L.), to hydroprene produced a malformation of the left phallomere that precluded normal copulation. This effect partially explains the sterility associated with exposure to hydroprene. Other morphogenetic effects induced by exposure included inability to evert the right phallomere, incomplete differentiation of the phallic groove, and equal-sized and widely separated styli. Frequency of morphogenetic effects decreased as the age of nymphal exposure increased and increased with higher doses. At the dose studied, the techniques used in this study failed to reveal any morphogenetic changes in either the female external genitalia or the internal reproductive organs that were examined.
