Abstract:

Optimal dose ratios of acephate and fenvalerate used in mixtures for the control of the tobacco bud worm, Heliothis virescens (F.), were calculated using a numerical analysis method for mortalities of 10-98%. No evidence of synergism was found across the five mixture ratios tested. Using the null hypothesis of independent action of the two compounds, a cost analysis showed that the optimal combination of the two chemicals depended on their relative costs and on the required kill. When high levels of kill (≥95%) were required, a mixture of the pesticides was more cost-effective than the use of individual chemicals alone. Furthermore, at cost ratios (fenvalerate to acephate) of 15:1 and below, relatively more acephate was needed in the economically optimal mixture as required kill increased. At ratios of 20:1 and above, relatively more fenvalerate was required with increasing required kill.
