Abstract:Formulations of copper, metaldehyde, and methiocarb were tested in 3- and 4-yr-old strawberry fields to assess their impact upon populations of Deroceras laeve (Müller). Slug populations were assessed both before and after treatment by quadrat sampling. Three efficacy trials were done during and after the reproductive period of D. laeve in Manitoba. Methiocarb 2% bait was the most effective molluscicide. Metaldehyde formulations were less effective, and copper compounds caused no significant slug mortality. Molluscicides appeared to be least effective when applied during the reproductive period, perhaps because of recruitment from eggs and reduced exposure to, and susceptibility of, newly hatched slugs to the chemicals. Because the strawberry harvest in Manitoba coincides with the reproductive season of D. laeve, prevention of slug damage will require long-term population management.
