Oviposition preference of female sharpnosed leafhoppers, Scaphytopius magdalensis Provancher, was evaluated in an open choice experiment using six cultivars of highbush blueberry, Vaccinium corymbosum L., and two cultivars of rabbiteye blueberry, V. ashei Rehder. Nymphs also were reared from first instar on each of the eight cultivars. Reduced growth rate and high nymphal mortality on rabbiteye foliage were significantly correlated with reduced ovipositional preference for these plants. This is the first report documenting host plant resistance to any insect by plants in the genus Vaccinium.
