Abstract:The influence of six parameters of UV-emitting electric fly traps on catch of house fly, Musca domestica L., were evaluated. Tested were lamp brightness to the flies, the size of the UV-reflecting or emitting area of the trap, lamp wattage, trap shape, trap color, and trap size. Brightness and size of the UV-target were the two most important parameters influencing catch. Other factors—i.e., orientation of bulbs, background luminosity, and trap location—also influenced trap attractiveness. Methods are given for calculating the relative attractiveness of light sources for house flies and of calculating the relative efficiency of any electric trap design. Calculated effectiveness has been validated by experimentation.
