Intermittent overhead irrigation caused 7-fold reduction in diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.), oviposition on watercress in greenhouse no-choice tests. Irrigation during the night reduced oviposition as effectively as 24 h of irrigation, but daytime irrigation did not affect oviposition. Eggs were laid mainly on lower leaf surfaces, with an intermediate number on stems and petioles, and fewest on upper leaf surfaces. Oviposition in the greenhouse occurred primarily at night with the peak rate during 2000–2300 hours. Darkness during the day stimulated oviposition. Suppression of oviposition may contribute to previously reported control of the diamondback moth by overhead irrigation.
