Compensation by the corn plant, Zea mays (L.), after damage by the corn earworm, Heliothis zea (Boddie), was investigated by artificially infesting ears with 1st-instar larvae at and shortly after silking in 1980 and 1981. At maturity the cm2 of damage for each ear was measured, and the kernels from each were counted and weighed. Mean kernel weight for damaged ears was greater than that for undamaged controls. Regression of mean kernel weight on cm2 of damage was positive and highly significant. Different results for 1981 as compared with 1980 were ascribed to different field temperatures during the experiment each year.
